Paul on the Arts in Philadelphia
Philadelphia, May 15, 2015—City Council At-Large candidate Paul Steinke issued the following statement on artists in our community.
“A thriving arts community is key to every renaissance. As Philadelphia continues to grow and thrive, we must ensure a strong and inclusive arts sector, one that reflects the beautiful mosaic of art practices and traditions in our city. A thriving arts and culture sector depends on artists of all types, from muralists to the Art Museum, street performers to classical musicians, and everything in between,” said Steinke, whose longstanding dedication to supporting art includes publicly displaying pieces from the Academy of the Fine Arts’ student art competition at the Reading Terminal Market and as executive director of the University City District, worked to increase foot traffic to art galleries through weekly programming.
“The city as a whole — including city government — needs to see artists as important partners in all of our work. They work and perform in every neighborhood, represent all of our diverse communities, and constantly strive to challenge our imaginations and push our culture forward,” Steinke added. “When I am in City Council, I will ensure that artists’ voices are heard and that we make the best city for the arts even better.”
